While I was in Los Angeles I had the opportunity to hang out with influential artist Catherine Opie, a photographer I’ve been compared to because of the trans subject matter I focus on. Opie created iconic portraits of queer subcultures in the 90s and has since gone on to document American identity in various forms, from portraits of empty freeways to high school football players.
I shot this portrait of her in her studio.
